ABOUT THE SONG PROJECT
The Song Project, initially a digital collaboration between Mark Rapp and Derek Lee Bronston, became a fully realized concept with their first tours in the Spring of 2010 which included venues in Switzerland and New York City. The duos focus is on the exploration of song, both written and improvised, including captivating arrangements of AC/DC, Radiohead, Tear for Fears to classic jazz standards and originals. Their first recording Art of the Song, vol.1 released in October, 2010 is an Applum for the iPad/iPhone and debuted to a sold out audience at The Blue Note in NYC.
ABOUT MARK RAPP
Mark Rapp, was named a "top emerging trumpeter" by Downbeat Magazine, featured on a Travel Channel documentary and has played with such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis to Hootie and the Blowfish. Mark has played sold out shows at the Blue Note, Joe's Pub, Yoshi's (San Francisco) and such venues as the JVC Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz Standard (NY), Dizzy's at Jazz Lincoln Center, JazzTime Festival (Croatia), Jazzland (Vienna) and much more. His critically acclaimed debut record Token Tales received rave reviews and his follow-up record, Braden-Rapp: The Strayhorn Project, recorded with saxophone great Don Braden and GRAMMY-nominated pianist Gerald Clayton, reached #4 on the Jazz Radio Jazz Charts.
ABOUT DEREK LEE BRONSTON
Derek Lee Bronston, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter has been on the scene since the 90s playing and recording both as a band leader and sideman equally. He has received consistent praise from the Jazz, Rock and Americana/Country scenes. As well as getting extensive airplay and critical acclaim as a leader with his Jazz CD Longing (featuring Tom Harrell), with rock bands The Hush and Mostley and more recently with his Americana/Country recording Empty River. Derek Lee has played as a sideman with Cecil Taylor, Billy Bang, The Great Shakes, Heather Greene, Cooleys Hot Box and Branford Marsalis to name a few.
ABOUT RENE HART
Bassist and Composer Rene Hart is a unique musician who draws from a wide range of influences. Rene has toured the world extensively, performing at major Jazz and multi-genre music festivals, including the Newport Jazz, the North Sea Jazz and the Montreal Jazz Festivals. He has made numerous appearances on television including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Night with Conan O’Brian Show. He has appeared and in several films and his compositions and playing can also be heard on numerous soundtracks. Rene has recorded or performed with a wide range of artists including Julian Priester, Dakota Staton, George Russell, Steven Bernstein, Branford Marsalis, James Hunter, Sean Lennon, Erik Lawrence, Bilal, Mark Rapp, John Medeski, Joan Osborne, Seamus Blake, Marya Lawrence, Chris Cheek, Phillip Harper, Billy Hart, Abraham Burton, Sasha Dobson, Bobby Watson, Anat Fort, Didi Gutman, and Mark Ronson.
ABOUT GREG RITCHIE
Greg Ritchie is an exciting young drummer making waves in the New York music scene. He hails from the Canada’s east coast and is busy performing and recording with a wide variety of groups throughout the globe. Greg has performed with many notable musicians including Dave Liebman, Seamus Blake, Vic Juris and Ingrid Jensen, to name just a few.
ABOUT ERIK LAWRENCE
Erik Lawrence, a longtime Levon Helm sideman, has built his career as a Saxophonist/Flutist/Composer/Music Journalist/Poet/Educator. Son of jazz saxophonist and rock and roll guru Arnie Lawrence, who founded the New School of Jazz in New York City and the International Center for Creative Music Studies in Jerusalem, Erik began playing saxophone at five years old. Eriks music is diverse, soulful, thoughtful, funky and deeply creative. Time and again Erik has been selected by artists for his strong, sensitive, unique voice and sensitivity to complement an artists music. Erik currently leads Hipmotism, an innovative group featuring Sex Mobs Steven Bernstein on slide trumpet, Allison Miller (Ani DiFranco's drummer) and bassist Rene Hart. Erik current co-leads the band Honey Ear Trio, with drummer Allison Miller and bassist Rene Hart, and has CDs out under the group name Hipmotism, with Steven Bernstein, and Merge, a poetry and music collaboration.
ABOUT J. WALTER HAWKES
Originally from Pascagoula, MS, three time Emmy Award winning composer/trombonist/ukulele player J. Walter Hawkes has been an active performer, composer, and arranger/orchestrator in New York City for over fifteen years. He has played and/or recorded with some people you've heard of, and many you haven't. It's also very possible that he's freaked out your little kids with the music he's composed for "Wonder Pets,"(Nick) "Third & Bird,"(BBC) "Blue's Clues"(Nick) as well as other TV cartoony gems on Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel.
ABOUT SACHAL VASANDANI
2010 Downbeat Rising Star poll winner, Sachal Vasandani’s unique journey has yielded two exceptional albums and a wealth of touring experience. His current record, 2009’s “We Move” (Mack Avenue) finds the young vocalist (who also serves as a producer) presenting standards & original music with a composed, subtle honesty. His breakout 2007 debut, “Eyes Wide Open”, made for one of the most startling revelations of the year – a fresh talent with a singular, deepbrewed voice and an original genesis of jazz and popular music.
